New at First umc

A new beginning for Edward!

Following an Upper New York Conference Volunteer in Mission journey to Zimbabwe in 2011, the United Methodist Women in the Watertown First UMC elected to support a 3 rd grade boy, Edward Dingadade, whom some of us had met as we worked at Ishe Anesu (in English, God with us) project in Mutare. Mutare is the provincial capital, a large city near Africa University. Ishe Anesu is an after-school tutoring program for AIDs orphans living in the high-density suburb of Sakubva, initiated by Maria Humbane, a GBGM missionary. After Maria retired, the program continued under the supervision of Nancy Chinzvende, an active and able member of the United Methodist Church of Zimbabwe.

The women at Watertown FUMC continued their support of Edward’s schooling, providing money for school fees, books, and uniforms for the next 11 years. Teams from UNY returned to Ishe Anesu three more times before the COVID pandemic made such travel impossible. A few weeks ago we received and responded to a request from Nancy to help Edward one more time, as he needed resources to pay expenses for his graduation from the college he has attended, as well as completion of an internship, in electrical engineering! This has truly been a life-changing and life-promising endeavor for Edward, and he now has a bright future before him. Thanks be to God for the opportunity to make mission outreach matter!

UMCOR Sunday is March 19 and a special collection will be taken that day, but any time in March will be good! Please make out checks to First UMC with UMCOR in the memo line and our treasurer, Yvonne Brown, will make the necessary moves. Please use a pew envelope for your generous contribution.
